However, this can feel like it may happen when you think about how far your furniture has to travel. From being handled by movers to sitting in the truck, the chances of damage can seem high. Fortunately, you don’t have to move feeling like you’re going to lose your favorite pieces. If you protect your furniture with the useful tips below, you’ll be likely to keep everything in great shape throughout your journey.
1. Use Your Blankets
Your blankets don’t have to be packed away with the rest of your linens. Put them to use by wrapping them tightly around any large pieces of furniture that you’re moving. To help keep them in place, use rope or duct tape wrapped around the furniture as well. If you don’t have a lot of extra blankets lying around, then moving blankets are a great substitute. Although you will have to buy these, you can sell them after moving if they’re still in good condition.
2. Reuse Cardboard
Cardboard from old boxes can be secured with duct tape on the corners of your furniture to protect them from scratches and dings. Large pieces should also be secured over glass tabletops or accents to prevent them from falling out or shifting while you move. Cardboard sheets can even be placed in between furniture in the moving truck to prevent pieces from scratching one another.
3. Prepare Each Piece Individually
Each piece of furniture will need to be prepared differently before being moved. For tables that have legs, you may need to remove them, so they are less likely to break. For those that cannot be removed, you’ll want to wrap a moving blanket over them and secure with duct tape. For dressers or chests with drawers, you’ll want to first take everything out of the drawers, so nothing is weighing them down. After this, each drawer should be replaced and taped down, so they don’t shift while you move.
4. Use Shrink Wrap
Stretchy plastic wrap can cover everything from sofas and tables to cabinets and ottomans. However, it’s important to wrap tightly and to use several layers in order to adequately cover each piece. This airtight option is also excellent when it comes to protecting furniture from moisture or dust, which can be useful when moving in unpleasant weather. Bubble wrap can be used in addition to this type of wrap, although it’s most beneficial for smaller pieces that don’t weigh much.
5. Invest in Moving Equipment
Without moving equipment, you can end up dropping furniture or scratching it on doorways quite easily. Even if you have a team of people there to help you, don’t underestimate the benefits of moving equipment as well. An added benefit of having this is the fact that it can prevent injury so you can move safely as well.
